Hypo21 Masterclass Review: Hypochlorous Acid and Skin Science

Helen Ward 4 minute read

Key takeaways

  • Hypochlorous acid is made naturally by the body as part of its immune response.
  • In a 12 week trial, a hypochlorous solution improved acne as well as benzoyl peroxide.
  • Small, focused masterclasses give you time to ask questions and really understand what you use on clients.

I recently attended a Hypo21 Masterclass, where I had the opportunity to speak and to spend the day with professionals who are genuinely invested in improving their knowledge and their businesses. It was a great day, full of useful information, open discussion and practical guidance.

The event was well organised and thoughtfully put together. There was a strong focus on sharing knowledge, answering questions and making sure people left with a clear understanding of both the product and the wider business approach behind it. It was easy to see how much care goes into supporting those who attend, and the atmosphere throughout the day reflected that.

Alongside the education, there was a real sense of respect for the company and the people behind it. Nikki and her team were spoken about very positively, which says a lot about how the business operates and how it supports those who work with the brand.

What is Hypo21?

For anyone unfamiliar with the company, Hypo21 produce a hypochlorous acid (HOCl) skin spray.

Hypochlorous acid is a molecule the human body makes naturally. White blood cells produce it as part of the immune response, where it helps to manage bacteria and calm inflammation as the skin heals. Hypo21 has taken this naturally occurring molecule and developed a stable, skin friendly topical solution.

The team explained that the spray is free from alcohol, sodium hypochlorite and harsh additives, which makes it suitable for a wide range of skin types, including sensitive and compromised skin. Rather than relying on lots of active ingredients, it focuses on a single, well researched molecule that works with the body rather than against it.

What the research says about hypochlorous acid

Trial data was discussed during the masterclass, including results for acne prone skin, and it sent me off to look at the wider research too. Hypochlorous acid has been studied for years, and the evidence is growing:

  • In a 12 week, double blind trial of 89 people with mild to moderate inflammatory acne, a hypochlorous solution improved lesions as well as benzoyl peroxide, with no local side effects reported in either group (Tirado-Sánchez and Ponce-Olivera, Journal of Dermatological Treatment, 2009).
  • A 2024 review in the Journal of Drugs in Dermatology reported that HOCl helped reduce itch within three days in people with atopic dermatitis, and a HOCl gel improved seborrhoeic dermatitis scores by 33% within 14 days.
  • The same review notes HOCl is most stable between pH 3.5 and 5.5 and breaks down faster in sunlight, so how a product is formulated and stored really matters.

Researchers are clear that more and larger studies are still needed, and individual results will always vary. But having trial backed data behind a product gives professionals real reassurance about what they are putting on their clients' skin.

How professionals are using it

The day also covered how Hypo21 is being used in practice. Professionals shared how they use it to support skin that is inflamed, reactive or slow to heal, including skin prone to acne, eczema, psoriasis, rosacea and dermatitis. It is also used alongside professional treatments such as microneedling and skin peels, to support the skin before and after the procedure.

Because hypochlorous acid is already recognised by the body, it is generally well tolerated and can be used consistently as part of a wider skincare routine.

The talks

The day offered a strong mix of talks, each adding a different layer of understanding:

  • Aggie Singh covered skin anatomy, grounding the conversations in how the skin actually functions.
  • Doctor Dan explained how hypochlorous acid works, bridging the gap between science and practical use.
  • Nikki walked through the products themselves, so everyone left with a clear and confident understanding of what Hypo21 is and how to use it.
  • I spoke about online visibility: how professionals can be found, trusted and understood online, and why showing your qualifications and standards matters more than ever when clients search for skin treatments.

The company behind the product

Beyond the product itself, the company is a strong example of how a brand can operate with integrity. There is a clear commitment to ethics, education and putting people first, and that came through in the way the whole day was delivered.

Hearing consistent, genuine praise for Nikki and her team reinforced the impression of a business that values trust, long term relationships and doing things properly. Hypo21 clearly takes care of its stockists and customers, offering strong ongoing support and showing up as a genuinely supportive presence in the industry. That kind of energy is felt, and it matters.

Why smaller events are so powerful

The masterclass was a really good example of how effective smaller, well considered events can be. Everyone in the room was included. There was time to ask questions, handle the products and properly understand what is being used on clients, not just in theory but in practice. That level of access and clarity is invaluable, especially when working with skin.

Between the education, the openness of the discussions and the way the company engages with professionals, the day felt thoughtful, inclusive and worthwhile. It is the kind of event that reminds you why learning in smaller, focused environments can be so powerful, and why choosing brands that value people as much as products makes a real difference.
