Small Business and Careers Hub At Professional Beauty

It’s one week since the launch of the Directory at Professional beauty Excel and I’m not sure how words cover it.

On Saturday night myself and Sue Davies welcomed out guests to celebrate the launch of our (separate companies) The Hair and Beauty Directory and the SEJ magazine.

It wasn’t a fancy evening, but what it was, is a laid back, authentic get together of like minded people. The Directory has been 3 years in the making so it felt quite surreal to reach that point and stand back and see the success its already achieved.

It was just a few glasses of fizz for me as we had to be up bright and early to welcome our first hub guests to network.

We had spent months and many hours planning the careers and small business hub and it was apparent pretty early in the day that our plans of running a schedule of open tables just wasn’t going to work. So a quick pivot and we became a rather hectic drop in centre!

The volume of people that came in and got great quality help was staggering. Some very lucky people even had multiple coaches helping at once! The unique quality to the hub was the help and advice was targeted to the person who walked in.

We were incredibly lucky to have so many experts on hand to offer their help for free and I really hope those of you who attended gained some valuable insights.

Sunday night I was lucky enough to attend the professional beauty awards as a finalists. A huge congratulations to all that won on the evening and a big shoutout to the awards tram who pull off such a huge event.

We have much still to add to the site as we enter our next stage but as life would have it I suffered a bereavement in the middle of the show and lost my mum. Which has meant that all the plans I have had this last week to run promotions, share lots of information etc was put on the back burning. I’m sharing this because life happens, you make plans, you prepare every little detail and then life throws you that curve ball and you have to adapt and go with it.

The Why

I attend quite a few events both in the UK and globally and gain a lot from this but as someone who doesn’t like to stand out I also don’t gain as much as I could.

My concentration levels are pretty low and engaging me is no easy task, so unless the speakers are very engaging I struggle. My worst nightmare is also having a microphone put in my hand to ask a question, so I also won’t interact.

I’m not alone with this and it got me to thinking if I feel like this and I’ve been in the industry for almost 3 decades and work as an educator who else is not connecting?

I was speaking to Sue (our co host) about this and we came up with the idea of a drop in centre, with a village feel. We wanted to strip back the barriers and connect. To allow a space to be heard and share their opinions, fears and experience.

There have been some serious upheaval within the industry in the past 5 years and business owners have to pivot fast to come out of the other side. This is causing a lot of anxiety  and for many the pressure of running a business is overwhelming.

So we decided to put together a weekend of conversations and structure to help. We were flooded with support and volunteers to help and became even more clear how much this support and changes are needed.

We are incredibly grateful to Professional Beauty for support this event and allowing them to use their platform to reach people
