A gloss or toner is a gentle, semi-permanent colour service used to refine, not dramatically change, your hair. A toner neutralises unwanted warmth, so it lifts brassy, yellow or orange tones from lightened or highlighted hair towards a cooler, more even finish. A gloss coats the hair shaft to boost shine, smooth the surface and refresh faded colour, and it can be clear or lightly tinted. Both sit mostly on the outside of the hair rather than lifting it, which is why they are kinder than a permanent tint and why the effect fades gradually over roughly two to six weeks.
