How to Make Your Lash Extensions Last Longer: A Guide for Clients
How to Make Your Lash Extensions Last Longer: A Guide for Clients
You could get your lashes done by the best lash artist in the world, but if you don’t take care of them, they won’t last. As someone who has personally battled retention issues with my own lashes, I know this all too well. Sometimes my lashes haven’t even lasted 24 hours. We've tried different techniques and adhesives, but it turns out the problem isn’t always the artist it can be hormones, residue, and daily habits.
Why Lash Hygiene is Everything
When you get lash extensions, only a small amount of adhesive is used to secure the extension to your natural lash. The goal is to create a "wrap" of adhesive around the lash, which keeps it in place until your natural lash sheds. If your lashes aren’t clean, the adhesive can’t attach properly. Think of it like painting a dusty wall the paint won’t stick, and it’ll flake off.
For me, hormonal changes—especially around my period—cause my lashes to produce more residue. If I don’t give them a proper shampoo before my appointment, my retention is terrible. Just before Christmas, I skipped this step, and every lash fell out within days. Your lash artist should recommend or sell a lash shampoo designed for extensions. It’s a game-changer!
Preparing for Your Fresh Set
Choose the Right Lash Tech
Picking a lash artist who matches your style is key. If someone advertises bold, dramatic sets and you want light, natural lashes, you might leave disappointed. Look at their portfolio, ask questions, and be upfront about what you want. If you’re a lash artist reading this, be honest if you can’t meet a client’s expectations.
Patch Test and Consultation
Choose a salon that offers patch tests and consultations. During this time, you can ask questions, look at style options, and discuss aftercare. Your lash tech should also explain how to prep for your appointment, including whether you need to shampoo your lashes beforehand.
Super Clean Lashes Are a Must
If your tech doesn’t offer a lash bath during the appointment, make sure to clean your lashes thoroughly before you go. A good lash shampoo will help remove oils, residue, and makeup. If you wear heavy mascara, stop using it at least 24 hours before your appointment to ensure it’s fully cleaned off.
Maintaining Your Lash Extensions
Daily care is crucial to keeping your extensions looking great and lasting as long as possible. Here’s how to maintain your lashes like a pro:
- Clean Daily: Use a lash shampoo specifically designed for extensions. Skipping this step can lead to lash issues like buildup, irritation, or even infections.
- Avoid Oil-Based Products: some Oils can break down the adhesive, so steer clear of oil-based cleansers, makeup, or skincare products near your eyes.
- Watch for Natural Lash Shedding: Losing around 3–5 lashes a day is completely normal as part of your natural lash cycle. If you’re seeing more than that, contact your lash tech to troubleshoot.
- Avoid Excessive Rubbing or Crying: Rubbing your eyes or crying frequently can weaken the adhesive and cause lashes to fall out prematurely.
- Be Mindful of Double-Wear Foundation: If you use heavy foundation, be careful when removing makeup near your lashes—it can leave residue that affects retention.
Why Lashes Might Fall Out Too Soon
Even with the best care, some factors can impact your lash retention. These include:
- Hormones: Like I mentioned earlier, hormones can make lashes oilier or change how adhesive bonds.
- Lifestyle Habits: Activities like swimming, excessive sweating, or exposure to heat (e.g., saunas) can weaken the adhesive.
- Incorrect Aftercare: Not following your tech’s aftercare instructions can lead to premature lash loss.
When to Call Your Lash Tech
If you’re noticing significant lash loss beyond the usual daily shedding, don’t wait reach out to your lash tech. They can help you figure out the cause and offer solutions to improve your retention.
Final Thoughts
Lash extensions are an investment, and taking care of them is essential to getting the most out of them. From choosing the right artist to maintaining daily lash hygiene, a little effort goes a long way. Remember, clean lashes mean better retention and happier clients (and lash techs). With the right care, your lashes can stay gorgeous until your next fill!
